Our nearest town is Lewes, which is a delightful 5 mile walk across farmland and alongside the River Ouse.
Lewes has Europe’s most extravagant fireworks festival, its own currency, the October Feast food festival, and a strongly independent streak. But better still, it has a brilliant independent cinema, a farmers market on the first Saturday of every month, a Friday food market, heaps of antique shops, and a number of unique independent cafes and grocery stores. A few years ago Octoberfeast was launched which, amusingly, is a September festival showcasing local food suppliers and establishments. It is the headquarters of Harveys beer, it occasionally floods, and is also home to Chaulas, a must for connoisseurs of Indian cuisine. The Pells Pool is a wonderful outdoor freshwater swimming pool and there are a number of historic buildings to visit, including Lewes castle.
This is a diminutive list to whet your appetite, please just ask if you have specific interests as we can normally find someone locally who can help. You can also check out the Viva Lewes monthly What’s on Guide which is full of unique ideas for local entertainment.
