Herstmonceux Observatory and Science Centre is a great activity near the campsite. It is the most under marketed tourist attraction we have ever come across. The displays and information are fantastic. Every child who goes along comes back full of enthusiasm for outer space and the planets, all of which come to life in a brilliant exhibition and observatory. It is a bit of a drive, but well worth it. The observatory is 18 miles from The Secret Campsite Lewes.
The Science Centre is very hands on. This gives kids the chance to learn, play and explore. There are large interactive exhibits throughout the year and permanent exhibits exploring astronomy, the earth and more.
You can wander in awe as you explore the domes and telescopes of a world famous astronomical observatory. They often hold open evenings, where you can explore the domes. Watch as the whole room moves to tilt the giant telescopes at just the right angles, then peer through the scope and see a whole new world above you. The historical telescopes are incredibly impressive and the observatory is in a dark sky location. If the weather is right, you’ll have some great viewings.
You could make a whole day of it and spend some time exploring the Castle and grounds that the observatory shares its space with. Take a stroll around the 15th century moated castle, then grab yourselves some tea and cake from the Chestnut tea rooms.
